View Full Version : Opinions please on lens choices...

OK, so I have both of the excellent 11-22mm and 14-54mm Oly semi pro lenses, and I like them both, and though the 14-54mm is used more, they both get extensive use.

I read everywhere that the 12-60mm is a class above these two lenses, is sharper, more solid, and provides a much improved IQ. I have a few questions for those who may have an opinion on this if I may...
Is this really true? is the IQ better on the 12-60mm than at either end of the 11-22mm and 14-54mm?
Is the loss of 1mm at the short end in any way noticeable...? Would anyone be prepared to take a few sample shots with these lenses, with the same image at 11mm on the 11-22 and then at 12mm on the 12-60 - then the same image at 54mm on the 14-54mm and at 60mm on the 12-60. This would enable viewers to see the difference in what can be composed.Depending on the results, I might be tempted to sell up the 11-22mm and 14-54mm, and purchase the 12-60mm instead.

John, the 12-60 is an awesome lens, and is quick and quiet to focus, but its is 'slower' (F-Stop wise) throughout the range (only slightly slower).

The 1mm may or may not make a diference to you - only you can answer that (have you run the exposure plot program to see where most of your shooting is?). For me it was a no-brainer and i went for the 12-60 as the loss of the 1mm was outweighed by not having to change lenses. (If i want ultra-wide i put the 7-14 on there ).

There is slightly more distrotion on the 12-60, but unless shooting lots of geometric stuff you would be hard pressed to notice, but its not as good as the 11-22mm.

The funds raised from selling the two lenses will more than fund replacing with the 12-60.

Tough choice, but like i said when i was faced with it i 'upgrade' to the 12-60SWD and do not have ANY regrets about it.
