I've had a few possibles for this but thought I'd raise it as a new thread.

Start around St Pancras and then a walk up the Regents canal to Camden market and beyond if you have the energy.

Other possibilities on this original post.

http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showthread.php?t=14755

I intend to check out somewhere to meet next Saturday but would be interested in numbers by then to see if it's worthwhile.

Let me know.

I was thinking to meet around 09:00-09:30 if that's not to early. In the past on other meetings people start to drift away mid-afternoon but nothings fixed.

You can make of it what you want really.

Hope you can make it.

I now have the necessary permission from SWMBO so I'm up for it! If the walking becomes a problem for me I'll bale out along the way, I'll just have to see how I am on the day! :)

Just a bump!!!

3rd September 2011, 01:56 PM
I went for a little walk around the start point this morning.

I propose we meet in the Cafe Da-Vinci in Grays Inn Rd(see map on URL below)

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=st+pancras&hl=en&ll=51.530413,-0.121182&spn=0.00268,0.004823&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=20.929552,39.506836&vpsrc=6&z=18

I had a blowout breakfast for about 5.00 this morning. It's in the middle of the map marked Da-Vinci coffee.
Is every OK for a start between 09;00 and 09:30?

So far I have confirmation from

Barr1e and Ann1e,Ian,Zuiko(John Perriment) and myself.
Interest from Graham of Rainham and Jon Shick,if you can confirm.

Anymore?

I think the route that will work will be along the front of St Pancras and then through the station to see the architecture.Just north of the station is St Pancras Old church and church yard which was used by the Beatles for a photoshoot for the White Album I think.
Under the railway aches to Camley Nature park. This morning here the was a family of 6 newly fledged Backbirds and also a free pond dipping pool where I found some Newts.

After that there's St Pancras lock and basin.
One shot from this morning to get you in the mood.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9036078.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/38408)

Two barges pass at the lock while a Eurostar arrives in the background.

That's as far as I went this morning but it's about a mile up to Camden lock and Market.
Plenty of seats along the way for our tired old legs.

I'll PM my mobile number to you next Friday.

See you in the cafe.

Just hope we get the weather.

Is there anything from the cupboard in the way of lenses or camera bodies anyone would like me to bring along to try? If you would like to hire anything and for me to bring it along to avoid the out-bound shipping charge, that would be fine by me too :)

Ian

Hi Ian,

Unless you're planning to use these yourself, I'd appreciate the chance to try either the MFT 9-18mm or the MFT 40-150mm. Also a VF-2, if you have a spare. I'm planning to bring just my E-PL1 plus 14-45mm. Thank you. :)

I think this walk doesn't need anything longer than 150/200mm,wide angle is a must though.

I'll probably bring the 7-14 and 50-200.

The forecast looks ok for the morning but going downhill later in the afternoon so we may be OK.

I'll be using my mft system and would very much like to see the 12mm, 45mm and the E-P3.

John,

I'll have the 9-18 and VF-2 with me, so if Ian hasn't got them with him...

9-18 may be a problem as they are all out with hire customers. We're getting an additional one but I'm not expecting it until Monday. One was due back a while ago but the customer has been reluctant to sent it back! He has our one and only 40-150 as well. Fingers crossed we get them back by Saturday.

I think I have a spare VF-2 and our VF-3s arrived today, incidentally. I'll bring the E-P3 and E-PL3.

Andy,

Sorry for the late notice, but, weather permitting, I'd like to join you. If you can PM me with your mobile number, I can catch up with you all if I'm running late.

Mind you, I hope this isn't a bad omen, as the last time I tried to get to a London meet (Kensal Green) I was stymied by some humanoid breaking into my car (so I spent most of the day at the police station) and I seem to recall you had a problem with a bacon butty!

Ian,

If you are prepared to bring the MFT 14-150mm on the chance I turn up, that would be much appreciated.

John,

I'll be bringing my EP-2 (with VF-2), Oly MFT 14-42mm (original version), FT 40-150 on adaptor and Panny 7-14mm and 20mm and you're welcome to try anything.

Regards to all,

Andrew

Cor!You've got a good memory,I was in need of that bacon butty after an hour.

I'll PM my mobile number to everyone hopefully tonight.

Looks like Barr1e,Ann1e and I will be out-numbered by you people with "small cameras".
I'm interested in seeing how good the EVF is now.

Here are a few shots from today:

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/547/P9106366.jpg (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/24408)

To start with a girl working in St,Pancras, on her break. This was accidentally underexposed by 1 stop and in fact required about 2EVs of of correction in Lightroom to be recovered. I decided to convert it to black and white, add some vignetting and some grain. We got talking to the girl who we discovered is interested in photography and uses both a Russian Lomo camera as well as a Nikon. I've given her our web address here - I hope she will visit! :)

Walking up Midland Road beyond the British Library there are all sorts of interesting things to photograph, as Andy demonstrates!

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/547/P9106393.jpg (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/24411)

Taken in the grounds of St.Pancras Old Church, which is a real oasis of green very close to the industrial metropolis of the station. A reminder that autumn is upon us.

There are some ponds in the London Wildlife Trust that is situated inbetween the railway lines going into St.Pancras and the canal and look what we found sunning itself, with either a juvenile moorhen or coot for company.

A great day, I think was had by all. The weather forecast, having been unsettled for most of the week, promised us a dry start and this we had, meeting at a cafe in the Grays Inn Road and then crossing over Euston Road to begin our journey north from St Pancras station (on foot, not by rail!) -

1.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107428_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38694)

Within the station we found a colourful reminder of next year's sporting event coming to the city -

2.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107442_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38695)

We passed through the station and made our way to St Pancras Old Church -

3.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107465_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38696)

When the railway line was taken into St Pancras, land was lost to the church and headstones were re-allocated space - but not a lot! -

4.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107474_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38697)

Graham, John and Barrie taking a well earned rest in front of the church, deep in conversation -

5.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107475_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38698)

We then spent some time at the London Wildlife Trust and at a nearby marina - Jon, John, Ian, Andrew and Andy -

6.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107514_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38699)

We then set off for Camden Lock but were very much in need of refreshment by this time and found same at the Constitution, on the edge of Camden Town -

7.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/P9107527_-_2.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=38700)

We walked on but on reaching Camden Lock, our luck ran out and the rain came. Can't complain though - six hours socialising (and photographing) in very pleasant company. Thank you Andy for organising the meet -

Thanks to Andy for organizing this meet and for all who came along and were such good company. I see many great pictures have already been posted. I had to have a rest, I was knackered! Here's mine:-

I arrived a little early as I was not sure how long it would take, so I took a few pictures before having breakfast. A local shop had just had a delivery.

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_015_e_c_r_s.jpg

I quickly found the cafe where Andy had arraned for us to meet :(

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_001_e_r_s.jpg

Then I realized I was holding the map upside down, our cafe was on the opposite side. And an excellent breakfast they did, too. :)

We came across some interesting establishments as Andy led the way

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_044_e_c_r_s.jpg

These flats are now almost of historical and architectural importance

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_056_e_r_s.jpg

Was I the only one to find some blue sky?

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_077_e_r_s.jpg

Or did I photoshop it? :o

We spent some time in the grounds of Paddington old church, a great opportunity for me to try Graham's MFT 9-18mm, a lovely lens and so small

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_096_e_r_s.jpg

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_102_e_r_s.jpg

We found a small nature reserve in the middle of London and everyone was soon down to business

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_132_e_c_r_s.jpg

Then we walked along the canal to Paddington Lock

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_156_e_r_s.jpg

We the walked the canal in the other direction, admiring the graffiti along the way

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_224_e_c_r_s.jpg

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_256_e_c_r_s.jpg

We even found a graffiti pub, where we were glad to stop for refreshments

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_245_e_c_r_s.jpg

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_252_e_r_s.jpg

Followed by another short walk to Camden Lock

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_259_e_c_r_s.jpg

Before ending the day at Camden Market

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_265_e_c_r_s.jpg

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_270_e_r_s.jpg

On the way to the tube station we saw the pun of the day (ghostbustours)

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_272_e_c_r_s.jpg

And then the punk of the day. He seemed a bit upset that I was taking a picture

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/500/CAMDEN_276_e_r_s.jpg

Or was he just posing? Charged me 1 for this shot. Anarchist? More like entrepreneur! :D

I travelled light today, with just an E-PL1 and 14-45mm lens, although I did borrow a VF-2 from Ian and a 9-18mm from Graham. Did I miss the E-3? Not really, and I definitely didn't miss the weight - or rather I did, in a positive way! Was I unable to get any shots with the Pen that I could have got with the E-3? No! :D I would have liked a telephoto lens at times, but if I did change exclusively to Micro Four Thirds I'd get one. :)

Looks like you guys really had a nice time. Great to see the shots. It's good to see the people behind the forum too, makes it even more friendly. I've been through St Pancras several times but never noticed the lovely church. I guess when I'm there I'm too busy thinking about where I've got to get to and how late I am. Now I'm wishing I'd made some time to take a day out and jump on the train to have joined you.

Thanks Andy for organising a really nice walk, and it was great to meet everyone. A few additional shots from me are included in my gallery here, but for some reason I can't get them to link into this post this morning - no idea why, as it's worked fine in the past.

Might try again later!

Cheers,

Jon

You were wrong, Jon, all the best photos hadn't been posted, you still had quite a few up your sleeve. Together with the E-1 you did a fine job - 1, 2, 4 & 6 are my favourites. It was great to meet you. :)

Notice the ever present CCTV... I saw it move a few times as we walked along the side of the station.

I spent a lot of the time playing with the 12mm f/2 that Ian so kindly let have use of. The last time he let me have use of a 14-35, and I simply had to have one. I think there will definatly be a trend to follow :)

I was most impressed with the lens and in particular with the snap focus feature.

Lucky we weren't behaving at all suspiciously, then, wasn't it?

At least if we had been arrested we know a good solicitor! :D

One might need his services if you were asscoiated with your 'Well float my boat' thread.

It seems from the pix we all had a pretty good day.

Thanks for the company and wisdom offered.

I thought it was like a spot the ball competition. Where you had to spot the subject of the shot ;)

It was just Graham's little joke - notice that he is not in the picture, looking ridiculous! :D

BTW the "subject" was that small scrap of paper, a chewing gum wrapper I think.

I was sorry I was unable to attend. Work commitments left me no choice
