I find hand-holding the E5+300mm + EC14 combo a bit of a pain in the a**e and I wondered about using something like the Bush Hawk camera shoulder support. Does anyone have any experience of these sort of things?

Thanks

I had looked into this, but found that the cost was higher than that of a quality monopod + head, so I went with the latter (Manfrotto Pro + 234RC).

Interested to have your views on it if you go ahead and buy one.

The cost is very high and I am wondering if something similar could be manufactured at home. A good hardwood stock with a Manfrotto QR head and standard remote setup could do the trick. I am mainly interested in something like this for a more instant response to flying birds.

If I do go down this road I'll post the results.

I saw this system that looks useful and comfortable as a support for heavy camera equipment.

I use a shoulder pod with the 50-200 and EC-14. It's from Kaiser and is really designed for video cameras but does a good job on the medium-sized kit - product info page is at http://www.kaiser-fototechnik.de/en/produkte/2_1_produktanzeige.asp?nr=96008. I got it from Fotospeed, cost about 40 notes I think.

It's not a very substantial piece of kit. I tried it with the 90-250 and struggled so I resorted to the monopod, but if you are more or less happy hand-holding the 300 you might find it adds enough extra support. It collapses very small when not in use, which is useful.

Good luck ... John

Update - just found it on Fotospeed's web page - I can't find a direct URL to link to, but go to http://www.fotospeed.com and search for shoulder and you should find it.

My GBP40 estimate was a little bit off, sadly.

Well I finally got one (remortgage required) and it seems to work well, although I'm still trying out the multitude of adjustments available to get it right. The first thing is that my eye is not in the same vertical plane as my shoulder so the QR plate needed to be mounted at an angle to avoid having to crank my head over to the right, it was fine once I had done that. It certainly gives a significant boost to steadiness with my heavy kit and being lightweight it doesn't add much to the overall mass. Raising it from a hanging position to viewing height needs a BlackRapid type of strap and I am experimenting with attachment devices. The trigger is a little sensitive (easy to get used to) but the shutter release cord is expensive (29 Euro) and very poor quality, it got caught on a twig and the end came off, I am now sourcing a new plug to repair it.

Overall a great piece of kit but very pricey for what you get so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to any UK buyer, but it is better value in the States.
