View Full Version : East midlands meet??

I'm getting quite jealous of all these meets being arranged.

Is anyone in the Notts/Derby/Leicester area up for a meet?

Homer

I'm quite often dragged up to Birmingham to see the mother-in-law. If there is the opportunity to sneak out for half a day, I'm up for it. Personally love to stroll in the Peak's when I'm "up north".

Well, I live in Nottm, and my name's Simpson, so we must have something in common!
Problem is I live in Brittany most of the time, but if it works that I'm over when you have a meet arranged would love to come along.

Depending on when/where, yes I would be very interested. I tend to go over to the east coast (parent visiting) every couple of weeks, but I'm sure with enough notice I could get "time off".
I'm just south of Nottingham ( a couple of miles outside the city)

So name the place and time :)

Homer Simpson

Some responses then? :)

So........ do we:

Leave until the fine weather & hope for lots of attendees as we can free diary space.
Do something soon just to kick things off & see how it goes.
Where? obviously I'd like it near me but anywhere within say 1.5 hours travel.
What - landscape/built environment/nature/other

This might be too soon to plan, but there is a Steam gala on 26 & 27th Feb at Great Central Railway http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/Events.aspx?ID=322

Although it's about a mile from home I've not been there for years & never taken chuffer-train pictures in my life. So I might tootle down there on the Saturday.

The main Station is about 3-4 miles from Juntion 23 of the M1, although I think I might go to Quorn station (no further from the M1) which is easily accessible & usually easy car parking.

Funnily enough I passed the Great Central Railway place today, I had to visit a certain Tesco which if I remember rightly is just around the corner from a certain Homer chappies place. ;)

It could be a great place to meet, for spring there's always the blubells or snowdrops to take photos of, are there any woods nearby where there are some good photo opportunities?

I won't be able to make the 26/27 as I've already have arrangements.

What this has reminded me is I wanted to go up to the tram museum at Crich at some point. Haven't been their since I was a kid and their have lots of theme weekend over the summer which look like they could be good photo opportunities.

Regards Bluebells, there are several places around here - over in the Charnwood hills

I have access to several reserves so I'll check this out

IIRC best time around here is mid to end April

Maybe an earlier or later event will be better for the Tramway museum, try and keep away from the school summer holidays which could make to too busy.

I'm in Derby so would like to come if dates suitable. Bluebells sounds a good idea if they are in profusion. I went to the GWR event some years ago. It isn't cheap but is usually big and busy enough to have plenty of things/people to shoot.

Don't worry I'm not buying a travel ticket  .
The car park at Quorn is free (I'm not positive it is when special events are on, however). There is ample opportunity from there. Also I know a few remote roads where the line goes under bridges.
All thats needed is a sunny day *yes

Anyone care to join me on the Saturday about 11 -12 ?

With all the new folks from hereabouts joining the forum I thought I'd bump this up.

How about a meet on Saturday 16th April, at the Great Central Railway station at Quorn

http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/location.aspx#Quorn

I'm suggesting the date & location because:

Its close to me & I happen to have nothing planned :o
I think its fairly central for East Midland Forum members
Its about 10 mins from the M1 (see the link for details)
The large car park is free & there is not an special event on that weeked (so less crowded).
We can chat & photo Trains & the surroundings
There is a cafe & toilets
There is a number of nature reserves etc within about 3-4 miles.

There is a good pub with food about 50 yards away
http://restauranteatingoutloughborough.co.uk/

If this date/location doesn't suit feel free to suggest options or indeed hi jack the thread.

I should be in the UK then, so would I'm sure I could come along to this. Quorn isn't far from me, and I used to be at Kibworth as a student many moons ago.

If anyone is intereted, I can bring along some of my exotica gear for people to try - the three f2 lenses of 14-35, 150, and 35-100. I never fail to be more stunned by the IQ of these, & would be more than happy for Oly users to try them out in real world situations.

I'd love to make the Quorn gathering on 16 April if I can. Re Crich Tramway Museum you can check out their events here (http://www.tramway.co.uk/events). 29 May is the Enthusiasts Day which used to be called the Tramathon and they try to get as many trams and service cars into operation as possible. Another good event is the Starlight Haloween on 29 October when the museum is open until 9pm giving the opportunity for night shots. There's a reduction on admission for groups of 10 or more (2 off basic price for adults - 9 instead of 11).

Good to see some enthusiasm for my suggestion.
I thought I'd better start to firm stuff up so as to generate a bit more interest.

I plan to roll up at about 11.30 (trains start to run thereabouts).
I've done a recce and it seems the cafe is closed (they are building another next door).
There seems to be bags of space so we could set up an enclave in a corner of the car park.

I can collect anyone who wants to arrive at Loughborough mainline station if they arrange in advance.

Can everyone bring as much kit as possible so we can all have a drool.

Here is a list of who I think is coming, can you add/delete names:

No idea:confused:
I've never been to one either.

My expectations/hopes are:

A bit of a chinwag
Making new acquaintances
Hopefully some advice from the more expert
A drool over kit - by the way, you are not allowed to come unless you bring that E5.
A few photo opportunities coupled with some advice
A sunny day!

What are others hoping to get out of it?

Hi everyone, I have only just discovered and joined the forum despite being and E system user for a couple of years. I live just outside Loughborough also (Burton on the Wolds) and Quorn GCR would be a good idea. (Incidentally I dropped into The Loughborough GCR station on Saturday while killing time and was very impressed by the engines in steam, but cursing that I didn't have a camera with me!).

If you are still up for it I will pop along at 11.00 but I can't stop beyond about 1.00 pm (Tigers at home). Probably worth checking out what locos/trains are running and their times for that day.

I shall get to Quorn at about 11.00 as I will have to leave about 1.00pm anyway but the following may help you decide on your own timing:

Checking the GCR timetable trains from Loughborough leave every hour at 15 minutes past, arriving at Quorn at 24 minutes past. The 11.15 is usually a 'heritage' diesel and the 12.15 should be steam (as should be the 10.15) .

The same train returning leaves Leicester on the hour and arrives at Quorn at 23 minutes past. So the return train at 11.23 should be steam.

Got that?

In other words if you are able to it's worth getting to Quorn before 11.23

Hoping for good weather

Right I've managed to locate, two BLM-1's and two Panasonic batteries, so am all ready for tomorrow.

I've just realised that I also have my son tomorrow too, I hope it will be ok if he comes along?

He's going to use my Panasonic DMC-L1 and fancies using my 50-200 zoom on it!

Why do we prefer zooms when we are young and then seem to favour wider and wider angle lenses as we grow older?

Nice to meet everyone - well done to those who managed to get their images on here so quickly, and special thanks to Homer for organising it. I was using the ND grads I recently bought for the first time today and the effects looked pretty good on the camera LCD - not so good when I got them on the computer. I'd doubled up the filters to darken the sky and it seems to have badly affected the autofocus especially on the 50-200. Is this usual does anyone know? Anyway I've managed to salvage a couple of shot and they are duly attached.

Sorry we didn't have longer to talk on Saturday - hope the event at Crich was good. Colour tones? - as I mentioned it was my first go with grad ND filters and sadly they seem to have affected the colours. I had to warm all of the images in post processing. Hi everyone - great to see plenty of pics from Saturday - I certainly enjoyed the morning in the nice conditions.
The lighting was difficult in some directions - but the ND Grad filters certainly seemed to help even if the colour tone was affected overall; I think the B+W conversions are really good though.
Here are a few of my pics - there are a handful of others in my gallery under GCR

If you are interested let me know. I will have a few more details later this week.
