Thanks to Andy on the 4/3rds user for giving me the idea, here's a homebuilt lens calibrator for those with cameras that allow focus adjustment.
Didn't cost a penny!!

Good idea.

I've often thought of using one of these to show me visually exactly what depth of field I'll get with a particular aperture at different distances because the various tutorials don't always seem to relate to what happens in practice - or at least I can't keep the information in my head.

Where did you get the chart from?

I made the squares in word and downloaded and printed the chart. I got it from here http://focustestchart.com/chart.html

These charts are only good for relatively close focus testing as you ideally want to fill the VF with the chart for best indication. I'm not sure if calibrating a lens at close distance necessarily means it will also focus correctly at longer distances.
