View Full Version : E-3 and FL50R off camea triggering

Hi folks,
*Was wondering if anyone can advise me if the only way to trigger an FL50R is by the on camera flash?
The reason I ask is because the flash always seems to interfere with the planned effect as it casts light onto the target.*
I'm new to the off camera flash scene and since I now have 2 of them I'd like to understand how they work :)

I would have thought that there would have been an easy way to just trigger the off camera flash, but can I work it out, nope!!

Hope I make sense and thanks for any help you folks can give

It is only triggered by the onboard flash, but when used in rc mode you shouldn't notice that much light coming from the onboard flash unless your really close to your subject. Hope this helps

There are several ways to trigger the FL-50R

1 Full RC via the popup flash on the camera

2 Slave Mode via the popup flash on the camera

3 Full Off Camera control via the FL-CB05 Lead

4 Manual Flash via hot shoe extension lead

5 Manual Flash via hot shoe to PC lead

6 Radio trigger

7 IR Trigger

8 Small wired off camera flash triggering the FL-50R in slave mode

9 Manual firing of the FL-50R in dark conditions with camera set to long exposure.

The easiest by far is the good old fashioned 5 meter PC to hotshoe lead

When using RC mode there are 3 levels of brightness of the built in flash (LO, MID & HI) & if using LO with it still affecting you, a deflection card (a bit of photo paper in front of the built in flash) can then be effective to still trigger the FL50R without casting any light on the subject. The inbuilt flash may need to be put up to HI in RC mode to compensate for the indirect trigger lighting.

Another thing to remember is RC mode is only TTL or FP-TTL with flash compensation adjustable at the camera. I would set up each flash on their own group (A, B or C) to allow indidvidual compensation adjustments at the camera (& select the channel different to any other Oly Photographer nearby to avoid fasle triggering from others).

I'll have to try a few of the techniques you mention. I'm new to the off camera flash scene and am hoping to get a wee studio in the house set up. Room is only about 3mx4.5m, but with the arrival of my daughter 5 weeks ago my wife is keen to get as many photos ad possible and I've always fancied learning portrait photography.

So small start at 2x FL50r, now just to learn how to use them effectively :)

Guess I'll need to consider reflectors, backgrounds, softboxes, booms etc.
Any suggestions on the kinda kit I'll benefit from more than welcome

Before you buy gear, there are some means to experiment with things you already have. Any surface will reflect to some degree & if not white, will add that colour cast to the photo (a coloured wall). A white bed sheet hung off a couple chairs on one side can either have the flash behind (diffused like a soft box) or in front (bounce reflected) with one flash bounced on one side of the subject (your daughter & mother etc.) & the other diffused the other side creating a highlighted side & the other, a soft fill. Other ideas can be using a flash from behind or at the wall (behind) & a flash over head with a snoot to give hair highlights. The ideas can really be endless.

I have bought some stuff from China which is fine to start with until you're sure of what you need (or want).

Can you get full RC via a second flash in the camera's hot shoe? The reason I ask is because I've noticed (ok, I think I've noticed) you can get a bit of the camera's on board flash reflecting of the subject if you're getting close. My E-PL1 lets me bounce the onboard flash so maybe not a problem but my E-30 doesn't have this neat little feature. Here's an example from a bit of testing I did with a remote FL36:

I think the the little bits of blown highlight seen on the wine bottle is actually from the camera's on board flash.......

How do you bounce the epl1 flash, I didn't know you could do that ?

Simples! It pops up on a very short arm and you can pinch the arm back. Not particularly useful for normal flash usage but I suspect it might be useful when controlling an off camera flash.

Ah right thanks for the tip, if you have standard height ceiling, you might be able to bounce the flash for normal usage, ill give it a try tomorrow *chr

To avoid the effect on the subject of the pop up flash (for an E30) in RC mode, a bit of card in front of it to deflect the light can work quite well. The power output during RC mode can be set at one of 3 levels, LO, MID & HI & if deflecting the pop up flash light, the HI level might be needed.

No. The FL-50R attached to the hotshoe physically prevents the popup flash from deploying, which is what the camera uses to control the FL-xxR Guns. The FL-50R in the hotshoe, will not allow you to select RC mode when the camera is switched on.

I'm always experimenting with flash systems as I too have noticed a tiny catch light in my models eyes when using the guns in RC mode. Ihave an old Fuji film canister (transparent) that has been cut to fit over the popup as a diffuser. I too have used cards, mirrors, etc to stop the direct flash hitting the subject. I'm trying to get hold of a length of Fibre Optic so that I can DIY a light conduit from the popup to the guns.

It's not a big issue as Photoshop can easily remove a tiny spot of light, But try a self portrait in a mirror and that's a whole different issue...:eek:

If only Oly had gone for Radio Control :cool:

If you can do it without TTL, then an after market radio multi flash control would be the next step.

Still, I am impressed with the Olympus system; especially the fact that Olympus catered for having other Olympus shooters around you at an event (but also accepted there wouldn't be too many as part of the design :D).

There is a huge advantage to being the only one using Olympus Kit...

You can get on with your shoot while the others are sorting out who is on what channel, frequency or slaved etc...

Also my big old SunPack puts out an EMP that sends all the radio triggers into melt down :D
