As many will know Graydon who arranged this last year has moved onto Canon as his active cameras. We really enjoyed his idea and whilst he's still around sometimes we agreed that as I'm a more active user I would offer to take this on this year. So no plaudits for the Idea. that's all his

Rules are the same (suspiciously so as I copied and pasted)

The 2010 End of Year “Open Challenge”

The Idea: A great opportunity to share our best photos of the year, and because the theme and time span are so wide, the quality should be very high! I am certainly looking forward to seeing the best we have.

In brief: Choose your best three images, any theme or style. Ensure your images are a maximum of 800 pixels along its widest/longest edge, up to 512Kbytes in size and with the EXIF data intact. The images must have been taken by you on an E-series camera between 1st January 2010 and 31st December 2010 and be in jpeg format.

Prize: None, other than the right to use “Winner of the E-System User Group 2010 Open Challenge” in your forum signature!

Rules:

Photos must have been taken (dated in EXIF) between 1st January 2010 and 31st December 2010 inclusive and arrive in my email inbox (see below) before the end of 31st December 2010.
Photos will be posted during the first week of January 2011 for registered users to vote upon.
Votes will be accepted from initial posting up to the 31st January 2011.
Results will be announced early week commencing 1st February 2011.
You must be the photographer who created the images in order to enter the challenge, and all entries must be visibly anonymous (No water marks or distinguishing features)
Entries submitted to previous challenges will be eligible providing all the other rules/conditions specified in these rules are met.
Images should be sent to the challenge organiser and you must indicate in the email (a) your real name, (b) your e-group forum name and (c) a title for each of your photos. Any entries that are not clearly identifiable and verifiable won't be entered into the challenge.
Entries should contain no watermarks, distinguishing effects or borders.
You must ensure your images are a maximum of 800 pixels along its widest/longest edge.
Each image file size must not exceed 512Kbytes and must have the EXIF data intact (so that this can be verified by the organiser)
Each image must be in jpeg format and have been taken on an E-Series camera.
You need to be registered on e-group.uk.net forums to qualify for entry into the challenge. The organiser may also enter the challenge (the entries are anonymous and the organiser is trusted to record votes accurately).
Up to three entries are permitted for this challenge. But if you want to withdraw an entry or replace it with another that's OK, you must make it clear in an email to the challenge organiser before the closing date, also ensure the email contains clear instructions and (if required) your replacement picture.
All registered members of the e-group forum may vote, including those who submit entries.
Those who submit entries may vote for their own photo but are expected to allot their choices fairly on perceived merit.
Voters should list their three choices in order of preference, by display number and title to avoid confusion.
Points will be allotted as follows: three to first choice, two to second choice, one to third choice.
This competition is just for fun and by entering or voting you accept to abide by the spirit of this competition and acknowledge that the decision of the judge is final

Please email the images to poty2010@shenstone.me.uk and ensure you put Open Challenge and your forum user name in the Title. If you don't get a confirmation reply after a few days then PM me to make sure I have your entry and it's not stuck in Anti-spam somewhere

I hope everyone likes this idea and many of us find the time to have a good rummage through this years work to find three stunning entries!

Good Luck!

Andy

Well this has had 149 views so I hope you are all thinking about your pictures...

I know that there have been some superb pictures posted over the year and I'm sure that you have many more at home

Remember it doesn't have to be someting new, but there is still time to get out and about for that little something special

Bump, and comment:

Searching through my qualifying pictures, I see I've kept about 1400 this year. That means I've probably discarded 2500. I wonder how that compares to the rest of us..?

Meanwhile: I've dug out what I consider to be the least worst 15 - but selecting three from them: Difficult :o

Actually I suspect I have a tendency to pick the more recent pictures (rather like your favourite CD being the one you bought recently). I will make a decision and send soon...

HI Pete

You could offer your worst three to give the rest of us a chance

I've had 2 entries so far, but am expecting a peak after the year end everyone waiting to take those new year's eve fireworks of course.

Pictures are arriving daily now

It's the last day for taking them in 2010 today so hopefully an even bigger flood tomorrrow before people get back into work mode (for those who do)

Thanks for all the excellent entries so far

Hi Andy,

Just going through a years worth of pictures now. This is a great reason for looking back over the last 12 months, the highs, the lows, the out-of-focus bits. Hope to have a set ready for you by tonight

Please clarify when is the closing date/time for submitting. Is it midnight tonight or might it stretch until "waking up time" tomorrow?

Thanks

It is with more than a little humility :o:o*yes that I have to admit I've not been as organised as I should have been and am now just processing things properly today I have noticed that quite a few entries do not have proper EXIF information in them so I am doing 3 things as this competition is just meant to be a bit of fun ...

1. I'm Extending the submission date for a week until Midnight UK time in the 8th of January (it fits well for me as I'm currently working on a talk I'm giving on the 8th) which is taking me a lot of my time It also fits because in at least one reply to a member I said the end of the 1st week of January because I remembered it wrong :o

2. I will review all of the entries for EXIF information today and will contact all entrants with problem pictures today

3. I am giving information here on how to "repair" EXIF information which also gives a clue as to why you should never trust it in somone else's pictures on any forum unless you know the person, and especially not in hostile reviews. I give this guideline in good faith knowing the membership here will use it in the spirit that is intended

If you use programmes that strip EXIF such as photoshop if you use the "wrong save option" or some HDR software, but want to have it in your picture for your own purposes then the following process will do the job in most imaging software that supports layers -

Example process is in CS3
Open up your final image
Open up the original (donor) image in a second window
view the windows as tiles so you can see them both
resize the donor image to the same size as the final image
Using the Move pointer and shift Drag and drop the final image over the donor image
You can at this point merge the layers or delete the donor base layer, but if you sage as JPEG it will happen anyway
Save AS a new image file which will look like the final image, but have the EXIF from the donor image
Example process in EXIFER
Browse to donor image
select EXIF?IPTC on menu and then
Insert from file
Choose Donor Image
Choose No to backup Current Exif (unless you want it for some reason)
review differences
Press Replace
Both of these work fine..

If someone really can't manage this let's see what we can do to put the information on how the picture was taken into text because as I sai'd it's just s bit of fun

So if you've not looked out your top three images yet please can I ask you you spend what remains of your holiday time glued to your computer and get the pictures into the competition

If someone doesn't think my unilateral change of rules and extension is inappropriate I will be happy to hand this over for 2011

Best wishes

Regards
Andy

On the contrary - I think this is a much more sensible arrangement as it allows us to include all photos taken in 2010. This is a annual competition after all so there's no time pressure to complete all the voting etc.

Thanks for that I've had a few communications saying the same and a couple more entries so far which will make the viewing and voting all the more fun

To those who haven't doen it yet ... please keep sending in your entries

I've decided to be brave and enter this year, but it seems that I've lost the Exif somewhere along the way.

Due to a PC crash, I've no longer got the originals, but I downloaded the photos from my Flickr site, and the details are still on there. Hope that will be acceptable?

I don't think I've got a cat in hells chance against the others on here though!

Just emailed my entries (it's more important to enter than to win!) after being without my broadband for over three weeks following my move to Dorset. I have to admit it's been lonely not being able to log on to the forum though having to unpack 155 boxes of "stuff" kept us busy.

It's nice to be back and to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy 2011.
