Hi all,

The italian four-thirds users forum has launched a petition to send to Olympus urging them to keep the four thirds system alive and produce new equipment in the future. I stumbled across it on the 4/3 rumor site here:

http://www.43rumors.com/four-thirds-alive-petition/

The direct link to the petition site is:

http://www.photocommunity.qtp.it/petition/index.php

Quite how effective it will be in influencing Olympus I would not care to guess. However it cannot hurt can it?

Cheers

just to be different I haven't...

I'm seeing just the areas of development I want to feel supported with my 43 gear (from flash brackets to bodies) and remain fed up with the constant fires fueled by certain web elements.

I still expect to see a 16-18mp (to match lens resolutions) sensor in an Ex with 10fps and improved practical AF performance (not more points/choices!) at some point but that's the sort of development I 'need' to support my system choice and shooting. Current development delivery doesn't seem out of line with technology (the above sensor would struggle based on today's paradigms) so I don't currently get any feeling of being ignored :)

For what it's worth I've made my input (No 1556).

It has just occurred to me that the whole "4/3 may/may not be disappearing" saga may just be an Olympus marketing dept cunning plan to get a free worldwide market survey and preserve their limited budget.:D:D:D:D

alternatively the 'petition' may result in Olympus moving resources from 4/3 development to 4/3 marketing in order to combat the rumors.....thus wasting (from our perspective) their budget.

I've signed up too but unless numbers are really substantial I suspect it will have little influence, mind you... you never know I guess.

Just a thought.

Do we actually know that Oly is giving up on 4/3? Or are we contributing to the decision by keeping the rumours alive and spreading uncertainty so that people who are considering making a system decision will decide against 4/3 because they hear the future is uncertain and fear they are making a bad choice of gear?

Well...

What we know is that Olympus have stated they are committed to the 4/3'rds lens range and to providing bodies that will support them.

We know that Olympus have stated that the 'upgrade' path for users of all 4/3'rds cameras is the E-5. Implying that other bodies may not be updated, though I do not recall seeing any 'official' statement to that effect, and maybe too much has been read into that statement.

We know that Olympus are not currently developing new lenses for 4/3'rds, but they have not stated that they will never develop new lenses.

We know the development effort is largely focussed on micro 4/3'rds.

Now I'm more relaxed about this than many group members, the committment to provide bodies to support 4/3'rds lenses indicates (far more strongly than users of other manufactures seem to have) a good and long life for my current investment.

Have I signed this petition - well yes, at the least it will help inform Olympus of the depth of concern (not that they should be unaware), perhaps it will encourage some future development. And given that the petition has been started, well the 'worst' case is if it does not gather a healthy level of support.

The official line is no they are not abandoning it but the only ones responsible for initiating and spreading what might only be rumours is Olympus themselves - continuing the system with just one premium priced flagship model does not consitute any sort of realistic commitment to the 4/3rds system and it would appear that over 1800 current e-system owners agree so far.

Signed on the basis of that logic hoping (not expecting) that Olympus will put out a more positive clarification of their 4/3rd commitment and hoping we don't see a "users petition Olympus to keep 4/3rds alive" headline on DPR.

I'm still keeping the faith that Olympus and Panasonic will continue to innovate the 4/3 format, full and micro, from compact to pro-level
