View Full Version : 32nd Challenge - "Reflections"

1st August 2010, 11:32 AM
32nd Photo Challenge - "Reflections"

Following on from the 2nd and 3rd place entries in the July event, the challenge for August is "Reflections".

A lot of scope here - reflections in puddles, oceans, mirrors, windows, or anything that’s shiny.

Or, of course, “reflection” can be interpreted as “contemplation”.

Have fun, and I look forward to receiving your entries.

David Stanton

How To Enter:

-Max of 800 pixels wide or high
-Up to 512Kbytes
-EXIF intact please
-Taken by you on an E-series camera between Monday 2nd August 2010 and midnight on Sunday 22 August 2010 inclusive.
-Please include your name, your forum moniker and a title for the picture.

Full rules:

1. Photos should be taken (dated in EXIF) between Monday 2nd August 2010 and midnight on Sunday 22 August 2010 inclusive and sent in during that period. Photos will be posted in the gallery as soon as possible after that.

We will vote during the following week, voting to be completed by midnight on Sunday 29th August 2010. The results will be announced on Monday 30th August 2010.

2. You must be the photographer who created the picture in order to enter the challenge, and all entries must be visibly anonymous and should be sent to the challenge organiser. You must indicate (a) your real name, (b) your e-group forum name and (c) a title for your photo, in the email. Any entries that are not clearly identifiable and verifiable won't be entered into the challenge.

3. Entries to the challenge :-

Should contain no watermarks, distinguishing effects and no borders
Must be jpg format and no more than 800 pixels on the longest edge
Must have been taken on an Olympus E-Series camera
Must have all EXIF data included for the organiser to verify.
Max file size to suit the gallery here is 512kb.

4. You need to be registered on e-group.uk.net forums to qualify for entry into the challenge. The organiser may also enter the challenge (the entries are anonymous and the organiser is trusted to record votes accurately).

5. Only one entry permitted per challenge please. But if you want to withdraw an entry or replace it with another that's OK, you must make it clear in an email to the challenge organiser before the closing date, also ensure the email contains clear instructions and (if required) your replacement picture.

6. Voting on the challenge:-

Any registered member of the e-group forum may vote, including those who submit entries.
Those who submit entries may vote for their own photo but are expected to allot their choices fairly on perceived merit.
Voters should list their three choices in order of preference, by display number and title to avoid confusion.
Points will be allotted as follows: three to first choice, two to second choice, one to third choice.

Please email me with the image attached at davidsa@ntlworld.com and please include the words “Olympus Challenge” in the title line

PS Admin – please make this into a sticky.

I've been wondering for a while what the topic of the challenge that would be run over the course of my holiday in Sharm would be. This is perfect... hopefully will be able to get an image for this one.

Stickie will do now!

5th August 2010, 08:00 PM
The first entry is in, but then the first week of the three will soon be over.

Tempus fugit!

Just a week to go now and only four entries in so far! Time to start trying out those ideas - don't let them stay as no more than thoughts in the bath (.... ah! there's a possibility...).

Indeed how could you look at yourself in the mirror knowing you missed out on such an opportunity ..... !

It looks as though I will have to miss this one. We are in the process of selling up here (Middlesex) and moving to Dorset so with the trials and tribulations of this exercise and the traumas involved, I am finding it difficult to get my head round the subject. And I had such a fantastic idea for this challenge!:D

Good luck to all entrants and, to those who haven’t entered yet, get on with it! Remember, it’s the taking part that’s important, not the winning!

Could someone give me a pointer please? I have an image I'd like to send in and I've reduced the size down to 800x600 as required but the image size is still too large 1.3Mb instead of 512Kb, how do I go about reducing that down to the required size too?

Scratch that all sorted now. Thanks

Just reading your edit and hope you managed to get your entry in pepper:)

21st August 2010, 07:27 AM
Yeah all sorted thank you, I downloaded Irfan View and used that to resize the image!

21st August 2010, 09:39 AM
Just 2 whole days and half a night to go! So there is still time but don't hang about!

There are 10 entries so far, all to the usual high standard and some quite ingenious.

Please remember the size limits (800 pixels on the longest dimension and 512kb maximum) and check that the EXIF info is showing.

Also, although not vital, it is helpful if you can rename your *.jpg file to match your picture title (or an abbreviated version of it).

Please could someone who knows pm me with instructions on how I should go about posting the entries to the relevant gallery for voting.

Have fun!

I'm hoping for a few more entries at the last minute. We are barely into double figures. Deadline midnight!

Having said that, I don't exactly intend to be sitting up with my cup of cocoa, stopwatch, and metaphorical chopper. I will no doubt be much too well lubricated.

So, unless anyone objects, any entries received up to when I turn the computer on tomorrow morning will be deened to be within the time limit.

That should help those struggling with GIMP/Photoshop into the small hours, and anyone from points West across the pond.

Phew. Did it.

Last minute :)

Here are the entries - 13 in all, and quite a variety - for your votes. All the EXIF's and sizes have been verified.

Please vote by emailing me (davidsa@ntlworld.com) your first, second and third choices by midnight (BST) on Sunday 29th August. Please quote the title of the picture as well as its number on this list (which is of no significance).

I will endeavour to post the results on Monday 30th.

First choices will score 3 points, second 2 points, and, would you believe it, 3rd choices just 1 point.

Only registered members of the forum may vote, so here is yet another reason to join if you are lurking!

It's Thursday already and only two votes so far!

It's a difficult choice, as always, but the time to get off the fence is fast approaching - we wouldn't want another coalition, now would we?

In fact I am beginning to wonder if any voting emails have gone astray - so if you HAVE sent one after 10:30am (BST) on Tuesday the 24th please send your email again to davidsa@ntlworld.com.

Im sure I entered this?

28th August 2010, 09:12 AM
Just two full days left for voting, so please get that pin out and have a stab!

We have enough in to establish a pattern, but still FEWER voters than entries.

Votes, please, for 3 pictures, in order of preference, to me, davidsa@ntlworld.com, by midnight tomorrow (Sunday) night.

David :)
